She Researched What's Hiding In Conventional Fabrics. Then She Replaced His Underwear.

Aspen Vincent is a competitive calisthenics athlete and holistic lifestyle creator who has been moving her whole wardrobe toward natural, non-toxic materials. Underwear sits against one of the most sensitive areas of the body for hours a day, so the material was the next thing she paid attention to. Here's what she found, and why she made the swap.

Straight from the video

“I never thought I'd be researching my husband's underwear, but once I found out what can be hiding in conventional fabrics, I replaced them. Underwear is literally sitting against one of the most sensitive areas of his body for hours a day, so the material was something I started paying attention to.”

Who Is Aspen Vincent?

Calisthenics Athlete. Holistic Lifestyle Creator. Intentional About What Goes On Her Body, Not Just In It.

Aspen is a competitive calisthenics athlete and holistic lifestyle creator who cares about being intentional with what she puts in and on her body. She's been transitioning her wardrobe toward natural, non-toxic materials, which is why choosing better everyday essentials — for herself and her husband — became so important to her.

Underwear was the piece that hadn't been audited yet. It sits against the most sensitive skin on the body for hours a day, so she looked at what it was actually made of — and at the waistband, where most brands still use synthetic. That's how she found Gotchies.

Heat Is The Enemy

Polyester Traps Heat Where It's Least Wanted. The Numbers Back It Up.

Your testes sit outside your body for one reason: they need to run cooler than your core — roughly 2–6°C cooler — to do their job. Research summarized in Reproductive BioMedicine Online lays it out plainly: when scrotal temperature climbs, sperm production and quality drop. One Danish study (Hjollund et al., 2000) linked roughly a 1°C rise in scrotal temperature to about a 14% reduction in sperm concentration.

2–6°C
Cooler than core — where your testes need to be
~14%
Drop in sperm concentration per +1°C (Hjollund 2000)
16 hrs
A day your underwear sits against that skin

Polyester is a plastic. It doesn't breathe the way cotton does, so it traps the heat you generate training, working, or just sitting at a desk. That's the part that needs no exaggeration. Organic cotton breathes, wicks, and lets things cool back down.

The Harvard Underwear Study

656 Men. One Question: What Do You Wear? The Loose, Breathable Crowd Won.

Gotchies black organic cotton boxer briefs with organic cotton-wrapped waistband

In 2018, researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Massachusetts General Hospital published a study in Human Reproduction looking at 656 men and the underwear they usually wore.

25%
Higher sperm concentration in men who wore boxers
17%
Higher total sperm count
14%
Lower FSH — the hormone your body cranks up when the testes are struggling

The study was about fit and airflow, not fabric specifically — and it was observational, in a fertility-clinic population. We're not going to overstate it. But the direction is clear and it lines up with the heat data: give things room and air, and the numbers move the right way. It's also why Gotchies comes in three cuts. Boxer briefs are the supportive pick Aspen chose. Boxers are the loosest option, and the one with no elastane at all.

3
The Water Bottle Comparison

Plastic Is Showing Up Where It Shouldn't. Your Skin Isn't The Barrier You Think It Is.

Polyester vs organic cotton underwear health graphic

Polyester and a plastic water bottle are both made from petroleum-derived plastics, and synthetic textiles shed microplastic fibers every time they're worn and washed. That's the kind of thing that can hide in a conventional fabric. Two studies from 2024 made the connection harder to wave away:

23 / 23
Human testis samples containing microplastics (Hu et al., Toxicological Sciences, 2024)
15 of 17
PFAS “forever chemicals” shown to absorb through skin (Ragnarsdóttir et al., Environment International, 2024)
7
Chemical classes commonly found in conventional underwear: phthalates, PFAS, formaldehyde, antimony, azo dyes, pesticides, microplastics

Here's the honest version: finding microplastics in testes is not the same as proving they cause infertility, and the exact dose you absorb from a pair of underwear hasn't been measured. What has been measured is that these compounds are endocrine-active in the lab, that they get through skin, and that they're in the fabric. You can wait for the twenty-year study — or you can just not wear the plastic. Aspen chose option two.

4
The Study That Started It All

In 1992, Polyester Underwear Was Tested As A Male Contraceptive. It Worked On Every Man.

The Shafik 1992 polyester contraceptive study

Dr. Ahmed Shafik had 14 healthy men wear a polyester scrotal sling continuously for a year. Every one of them stopped producing sperm — on average by day 140 — and every one recovered about five months after removing it. The paper, “Contraceptive efficacy of polyester-induced azoospermia in normal men,” was published in the journal Contraception and has been sitting on PubMed ever since.

14 / 14
Men became temporarily infertile
140
Days, on average, to reach zero sperm count
157
Days, on average, to recover after stopping

A sling worn 24/7 is a more extreme setup than a pair of boxer briefs, and it was 14 men — we'll say that out loud so you don't have to wonder. But it's the reason a whole generation of researchers started asking what synthetic fabric does against that skin. Thirty years later, nobody in Big Underwear has brought it up.

You don't need certainty to make the comfortable, verifiable choice. GOTS-certified organic cotton removes the question entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I want to eliminate elastane completely?+

Go with the boxers — they're 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, no elastane at all. The boxer briefs Aspen picked are 95% organic cotton with 5% BPA-free elastane for support and stretch. Both use the same organic-cotton-wrapped waistband and the same certifications; the difference is fit, airflow and whether you want any stretch.

Is “GOTS” and “OEKO-TEX” actually verifiable, or is it another marketing term?+

Both are third-party certifications, not self-declared labels. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) audits the cotton from farm to finished garment. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished product for hundreds of harmful substances.

Our OEKO-TEX certificate number is 05.T.4389. You can enter it at oeko-tex.com/en/label-check and see it for yourself.

Does organic cotton hold up to real training — lifting, running, HYROX?+

Yes. The boxer briefs are 95% organic cotton with 5% BPA-free elastane, a 4.5" inseam, and an organic-cotton-wrapped waistband, so they stay put without a plastic band digging in. Elite marathoners, HYROX competitors, and Navy pilots train and fly in them.

Cotton won't wick sweat the way a synthetic does — it breathes instead of trapping heat. For most men that trade is exactly the point.

How should I size?+

S (28–30" waist), M (32–34"), L (36–38"), XL (40–42"), XXL (44–46"). Cotton fits true to size. If you're between sizes, go up — organic cotton breathes better with a bit of room. If you end up with the wrong size, the first exchange is easy.

What's the actual return policy?+

100 days from delivery on most orders. Try on one pair to check fit. Return the unworn pairs for a full refund. Refunds carry an $8 handling fee (exchanges are free) and outbound U.S. shipping isn't refundable, but there are no restocking fees, no scripts to fight through, and no waiting period.

Important note: some large bundles — including the Closet Clean Out — are final sale and not eligible for returns. Boxer brief multi-packs, all single-pair orders, and most smaller bundles are fully eligible. Check the full refund policy before ordering if you're unsure. Returns are processed through getgotchies.loopreturns.com. International orders are final sale.

$30 a pair is more than I'd normally spend on underwear. Why?+

Certified organic cotton costs more to grow, and third-party certification costs more to maintain, than a polyester blend from a mass supplier. You're paying for the fabric and the proof.

Bundles bring it down: 4-Pack is $27/pair, 8-Pack is $24/pair, and Aspen's code takes another 15% off your first order.
